Adverse drug events in oncologic patient hospitalized

Objective: To identify adverse drug events in cancer patients treated in a large hospital in the expanded region of the Mid-West of Minas Gerais.
Methods: A retrospective, exploratory and descriptive study with a quantitative approach, which took place the application of tracers proposed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement as a strategy for identifying adverse drug events. Data collection was based on random selection from the medical records of patients of all ages who were diagnosed with cancer and progressed to death in the period July 2014 to June 2015.
Results: From the evaluation of 80 medical records, were detected 126 trackers that were present in 75 (93.7%) of the records relating to hospitalized cancer patients. These trackers led to the identification of 95 events adverse drug in 71 (88.7%) of the records in question.
Conclusion: The observation of a high rate of adverse drug events is a threat and can cause serious damage to the health of cancer patients treated at the hospital under study. In this context, it is essential to adopt strategies to reduce the occurrence of adverse events and intensify activities aimed at patient safety.
