Pharmacoeconomic studies in Brazil: where are we?

Introduction: Pharmacoeconomics is a field in the health economics area that was notice due to the increase in the expenses in health observed worldwide scenario. Pharmacoeconomics may be used as support to correct therapeutic decisions, evaluating costs and outcomes pharmacotherapeutic, assuring best use of resource. The present study has the objective to analyze the profile of the publications about pharmacoeconomic studies from Brazil. Casuistic and Methods: A literature review it was conducted with selected articles indexed in PubMed and Scielo, published until the July of 2014. It was considered eligible for this study pharmacoeconomic articles with outcome and costs analysis. Results: It was selected 11 studies. The analysis of the papers indicated that Brazilian pharmacoeconomic studies are scarce, with publications starting in 2002 and with a slight increase in the later years. The types of pharmacoeconomic analysis identified were cost-effectiveness (10) and cost minimization (1) for different morbidities, evaluating costs and outcomes of different medicines to treat the same clinical condition. In two of these studies there were a declared conflict of interests. Conclusion: With these information, it is clear the need of an expansion in the publishing of pharmacoeconomic studies for reasoning of therapeutic decisions in order to promote the rational allocation of limited financial resources for the purchase of medicines in Brazil.
