Potential drug-drug interactions in neonatal intensive care unit of a public hospital in Bahia, Brazil

Objective: To evaluate the profile of potential drug interactions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU-Neo) of a public children’s hospital in the interior of the State of Bahia. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out, with a cross-sectional design. The printed medical prescriptions (MP) of the ICU-neo were collected and analyzed from May 1st, 2016 to October 31, 2016. We included only MP of two or more drugs with patient identification, date, prescriber's signature and stamp. Data were analyzed using the Micromedex software, classifying potential drug interactions (PDI) according to severity, documentation, mechanism of action, handling of the interaction and potential consequences. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 20.0 for Windows software. Results: 1476 MP were analyzed and 83 PDI were identified. In 99.4% of the MPs, one or more PDI were found and the most frequent were: fentanyl + phenobarbital (10.5%); fentanyl + midazolam (10.5%); midazolam + phenobarbital (10.4%). The contraindicated interactions were: domperidone + fluconazole (0.3%); epinephrine + linezolid (0.1%); calcium gluconate + ceftriaxone (0.1%); dopamine + linezolid (0.1%). Conclusion: This study showed a high frequency of PDI in MP in the ICU-Neo.
