Enteral probe drug utilization profiling of patients in a university hospital
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the profile of patients and the characteristics related to the drugs prescribed for the use by enteral nutrition probe, at the University Hospital of a city at Minas Gerais state. Methods: This was an observational, retrospective and descriptive study, which evaluated 60 patients, over 18 years, who used some type of enteral feeding between May and October 2011. Data were collected from medical records, prescriptions and monitoring reports at the nutritional therapy service of the hospital and they were evaluated by means of descriptive statistics, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 14.0. Results: Patients were predominantly male, and the most prevalent ages were between 60 and 69 years. Patients undergoing neurological therapy were the most frequent. Each patient used an average of 4.4 drugs through enteral route, with a total of 80 different specialty pharmaceuticals prescribed. The major pharmaceutical dosage form were solid drugs (85.0%), from which 38.2% had the same active ingredient available in oral liquid form. Conclusion: The polypharmacy and the frequency of prescription of solid drugs showed that clinical practice was not always performed as recommended, highlighting the need of updated and secure information capable to base the drug administration by enteral nutrition probe.
