Abstract

The use of parenteral nutrition in cancer patients has been conducted in various forms and stages of cancer treatment. However, their use, especially in the long term, imposes risks of metabolic complications. This work consists in describing a case report about the monitoring performed by pharmacist of an oncologic pediatric patient using parenteral nutrition that developed metabolic complications such as hyperglycemia and pancreatitis. Aims to describe the features of the complications presented and the patient monitoring performed by pharmacist. Throughout the period of use of parenteral nutrition data were collected from medical prescriptions and laboratory tests in search of metabolic abnormalities, review of pharmacotherapy and possible adverse reactions. The establishment of causality relation between complications and medicines was used the Naranjo algorithm. It was found that prolonged use of corticosteroids was a contributing factor to the persistence of the hyperglycemic and the pancreatitis episode was correlated to parenteral nutrition. The pharmaceuticals interventions were accepted and helped in the effectiveness of medical procedures that would prevent the worsening of clinical result of metabolic changes. The monitoring improved integration of the pharmacist to the multidisciplinary team.
