To describe the experience of the employment of an Operational Plan that used the Situational Strategic Planning system in a Mental Health Unit in a small general hospital. This is based on an experience report regarding a process that occurred through explanatory, normative, strategic and tactical-operational moments, with the development of workshops. These were documented and analyzed at a later time. The positive repercussions observed include increased interaction and communication between the participants through the exchange of experiences during the workshops. After defining the viability of the proposals, we analyzed the power of decision, execution and maintenance of the stock. The analysis of feasibility was done by surveying existing and necessary resources by making development a strategic activity to overcome the deficits found. It was also observed that with the reorganization of some aspects related to the nursing routine, it was possible to significantly reduce the medication administration errors in the unit. The application of this management tool proved to be very effective to improve the knowledge about the reality where the service is employed. This allowed for solutions to be generated in a dynamic way, as well, the system assisted in developing strategies for the problems presented.
