Off label medications in a pediatric therapy unit

Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to classify standardized drugs in a children’s hospital regarding their off- label use, through the evaluation of the drugs prescribed to patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It was identified that of the total of 6.091 prescribed drugs, 3.041 were used off-label, representing 49.9% of the drugs prescribed, 64,0% of the drugs being off-label for the administration route, 30,5% for the age group and 5.5% of pharmacological indication. It was concluded with this study that, a large amount of drugs was used off label in children.
