Abstract

Objective: Identify the types of adverse drug, medicinal products and drug classes for this event in patients admitted to the dermatology clinic of a public hospital.

Method: This study is descriptive, quantitative and exploratory, employing a prospective longitudinal design. Data was collected from the dermatology ward of the Central Institute, hospital of São Paulo University Clinics, during the period dating from August 2013 until February 2014.

Results: 22 patients, with 23 confirmed cases of drug-induced skin reactions, were studied. 68% of the patients were female; 73% of the patients were caucasian. The largest concentration of patients was between 61-80 years old. The most frequent type of drug-induced skin reaction was related to photosensitivity; the second most frequent was “DRESS”. The use of anti-hypertensive was found to be associated with drug-induced skin reactions in 32% of the confirmed cases. In 32% of the cases the patient did not present additional co-morbidity, but overall, hypertension was the most common co-morbidity. The most prescribed for the resolutions of cases with 36% were antihistamines and corticosteroids classes.

Conclusion: Knowing the age, gender, ethnicity, medications and more common pharmacological class in cases of drug eruption, we must become more aware of suspected adverse drug reactions and how to treat them.
