Objective: To evaluate the impact pf educational interventions conducted by a University Hospital of the Sentinel Network at São Paulo for the encouragement of voluntary reporting of deviations from quality of health technologies and on incidents which affect or may affect patient safety.
Methods: This observational study is analytical, retrospective, which were analyzed in four different educational interventions, according to the reporting number received in three periods: before, during and after the intervention. We also determined the professional category that most part of the interventions and the category that most reported during the study period.
Results: The reporting increased by 225% after the first educational intervention, 146% after the second, 110% after the third, at 471% during and 284% after the fourth intervention analyzed. Comparing the four interventions, the fourth was the most effective for increasing voluntary reporting. The category that participated in the educational interventions was nursing (57% public), and also the most report: 73% of reports were made by nurses.
Conclusions: Educational interventions are important instruments to encourage voluntary reporting, which provide information necessary to identify, evaluate and minimize risks that may affect the security and integrity of patients. More than that, these interventions are key to changing the culture of health professionals, as alert to all security problems is central to continuous improvement in patient care.
