Interaction between serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tamoxifen: a literature review

To performe a literature review of clinically relevant drug interactions with the concomitant use of tamoxifen and serotonin reuptake inhibitors. A keyword research was conducted using the terms “drug interactions,” “tamoxifen,” and “depression” in the PUBMED database; “antidepressive agents,” “antidepressants,” and “tamoxifen” in LILACS; “tamoxifen,” “drug interactions,” and “depression” in EMBASE. Studies published from 2005 to 2015, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were considered.The research returned 80 articles. Duplicates and articles that did not meet research criteria were excluded. As result, 14 articles were considered for this study.There is an clinically relevant interaction between serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tamoxifen. The concomitant use of both drugs should be avoided in order to prevent serious side effects.
