Objectives
This paper aimed to trace a profile of the reports made in 2012 and 2013 at the Western Paraná University Hospital, and to offer epidemiologic data from drug-related adverse effects to managers and to the scientific community.
Methods
It is a descriptive, retrospective study, where reports of adverse effects from January/2012 until December/2013 were analyzed.
Results
There were 58 drug-related adverse effects reported on the studied period, whereas 33% happened in 2012 and 67% in 2013. These effects were more frequent in males (55%) and the average age of the patients was 35 years old. The hospital sector that reported the most reactions was the Orthopedics and Neurology, and the most reported drug was vancomycin. In assessing the severity of the reactions, 50% were classified as mild, 37% as moderate, 13% as severe, and there were no deaths because of side effects. In relation to the causality, 60% were classified as possible, 31% as probable, 7% as doubtful, and 2% as proven. The most reported side effect was the erythema (24%), followed by itching (15%) and nausea (12%). All patients were polymedicated, which contributed to the occurrence of drug-related side effects.
Conclusion
The current study made it possible to quantify drug-related adverse effects, in 2012 and 2013, at the Western Paraná University Hospital. These results contribute to the national and international databanks, assuring safety to the patient.
