Abstract: The stroke has a great impact in the Brazil’s public health what justifies the necessity of a better comprehension of its socials costs. Objectives: identify the profile of patients with stroke and aspects related to security in the use of medications in those patients. Methods: application of semi-open questionnaire to hospitalized patients, with diagnosis of stroke and the research in computerized medical records. Results: the average age was 66,5 years. Most of the strokes were the ischemic type and in 44,9% (71) of the cases the patients had previously episodes of stroke. Patients using chronic medications corresponded to 78, 3% (123), and 132 (83,6%) said to be adherent to the treatment. 46 (29,3%) affirmed to have ingested medication in the moment of the stroke, and it’s important to realize that the solution of bicarbonate with lemon was the most used. The biggest percentage of patients arrived to the hospital with less than 4 hours, 56,4% (89), and the thrombolysis was realized in a small part of the patients, 3,2% (5). Conclusion: the average age of the patients and the recurrences may justify the necessity of the use of chronic medication. The medication adherence is an important problem of health and it’s difficult to measure and it may be sub notified. The use of self-medication in the episodes of stroke is common and may influence in the patient security, so it has to be discussed by the health professionals. Time to arrive at the hospital can be a factor that compromises the thrombolysis.
