Adverse drug reactions as cause of admission to a university hospital in Belém – Pará

Abstract

a) Objective: to describe the profile of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) as cause of admission to the University Hospital João de Barros Barreto (HUJBB). b) Method: The survey was conducted from data collected in the semi annual reports of Risk Management Service of the Hospital, from January 2009 to December 2010. Variables analyzed were obtained during admission for ADR (gender, age group, use of self-medication and medication under prescription), and the main clinical manifestations with hospital outcomes. c) Results: In 3.2% of admissions were due to adverse drug reactions, with a higher occurrence in females and in the age group of 41-60 years. The Antitubercular agents represented the most common medication during admission (42.7%), the majority of clinical manifestations were registered in the gastrointestinal tract (59%). Regarding self-medication, the majority consisted of analgesics and antipyretics (54.5%) and used more by women (68.2%). d) Conclusions: In the years 2009 and 2010, at University Hospital João de Barros Barreto, 3.2% of admissions were due to adverse drug reactions. Hospitalizations for ADR were higher among women, in the age group between 41-60 years and the main clinical manifestations were produced in the gastrointestinal tract.
