Analysis of selected drugs in a public hospital: case study

Abstract

Background: The selection of essential drugs is a primary activity for the rational use of drugs. Thus the institution of pharmacy and therapeutics committees in hospitals aims to subsidize the choice and ensure access to effective medicines, safe and high quality. This study aimed to identify and discuss the selected drug in a municipal public hospital located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the organization of the service for this action of pharmaceutical care. Methods: we conducted exploratory case study which included the following steps: (a) review the literature on the subject, (b) collecting information on service Pharmacy Hospital studied about the medicines related to the use and organization for this institution activity, (c) classification and organization of items according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical and (d) analysis of drugs, taking as a basis the National List of Essential Medicines (Rename). Results: It was not institutionalized a commission multidisciplinary drug selection in the case studied. Among the significant number of drugs used, the majority was classified as antimicrobials for systemic use, which was suited to the profile of care from hospitals. After read back, we observed 44.8% of the drugs by pharmacological group were not included on the list of national reference. Conclusion: The choice of drugs did not appear to be based on the evaluation criteria of efficacy and safety. The institution of CFT in hospitals is indicated by the World Health Organization, in order to select medicines appropriately and improve health care.
