This study aimed to determine the pharmacoeconomic impact of antimicrobial (ATM´S) control carried by the Intensive Care Unit’s (ICU) pharmacy in the Dr. José Frota Institute (IJF), between the months of June and August of 2006 and 2007. It is a descriptive observational and retrospective study with quantitative approach which took place in the ICUs of IJF. The data was collected through interviews with the pharmacists, analysis of the control charts of dispensing ATM's to the ICUs, as well as analytical reports of ATM consumption. The results revealed an increase in the consumption and the costs with ATMs of first line (cephalosporins of 2º and 3º generation and penicillins) and reduction in the ATMs of broad spectrum (carbapenems, glycopeptides and cephalosporins of 4º generation). This merit can be attributed to the pharmacist’s performance in search of a better effectiveness in the treatment, security of the patient and optimization of the pharmacoeconomics for the institution with rational antimicrobial use.
