Abstract

The antimicrobials are drugs widely used in hospitals, and cause a great concern about its rational use. Thus, measures to encourage rational use of antimicrobials have been proposed, such as monitoring of the use of this class of drugs.

Objectives: Analyze the consumption profile of injectables antimicrobials used in a private hospital of Caxias do Sul, in 2009.

Methods: We analyzed the electronic records of drug consumption of patients using the selected antimicrobial. The consumption of antimicrobials was expressed in the Defined Daily Dose (DDD) per 100/beds-day.

Results: The most consumed antimicrobials during the study period were ampicillin/sulbactam, ciprofloxacin and cefazolin. The average value found of DDD/100 beds-day for ampicillin/sulbactam (30,9) was higher than the observed in studies developed in other hospitals (3.10 – 13.36 DDD/100 beds-day). Ciprofloxacin (7,5 DDD/100 beds-day) showed a value of DDD similar to that found in other hospitals and for cefazolin the values of DDD (4,1) were lower when compared with other institutions.

Conclusion: The analysis of the high consumption of antimicrobials at a hospital institution can direct specific interventions and points the inappropriate or abusive use.
