Caracterization of acute poisonings recorded in São Luís/MA: the importance of hospitals as notifiers’ centers
Abstract
Objective: To characterize the profile of acute human poisonings registered in São Luís-MA’ hospitals in 2011. Method: A retrospective and descriptive study was performed through the analysis of all medical records. The analyzed variables were: toxicant, gender, age, circumstance and outcome. Results: A total of 468 cases of acute poisonings were registered in São Luís/MA in 2011. The average age of individuals was 24,7 ± 17,3 years. The most involved toxicants were drugs of abuse (30,13%; n=141), medicines (22,65%; n=106) and food (8,33%; n=39). Females were most affected (51,49%; n=241). In regards to the circumstances, 137 cases (29,27%) were due to abuse of drugs, 82 cases (17,52%) could not be ascertained in medical records and 58 cases (12,39%) were related to environmental accidents by poisonous animals. Most cases resulted in cure (93,30%; n=434) and four cases (0,78%) resulted in death. Conclusion: São Luís/MA showed a peculiar and diverse profile when compared to national and regional data concerning the variables analyzed. The local poisonings’ registration system showed to be deficient as it did not seek to describe and clarify important data related to the cases, which may lead to inadequate/incomplete registers and adversely affect the knowledge of the acute poisonings profile in the State of Maranhão.
