Abstract

Background: Medicines represent an important input for health care. The lack of adherence to drug therapy results not only in damages to the health and quality of life of the patient, but also it causes the waste of the resources of the health system. Objective: To evaluate the adherence to drug therapy and quality of life of patients at an USF in Novo Hamburgo, RS. Methods: A observational, quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with patients with chronic diseases who answered questionnaires regarding their sociodemographic profile, adherence to drug therapy (Morisky-
Green and Brief Medication Questionnaire - BMQ) and quality of life (Whoqol-bref). The data were analyzed by the SPSS® 24.0 program, using Student’s t-test for comparison between groups and Pearson’s correlation for the relationship between variables, using a p < 0.05. Results: A total of 80 patients, aged 59 (± 12) years and a higher female prevalence were evaluated. The Morisky-Green scale revealed maximum compliance in 52.5 % of the patients. At BMQ, 70 % of the patients had a low adherence score. Negative correlations were observed between age and BMQ belief domain
and positive between age and recall domain. Conclusions: There was no agreement between the Morisky-Green and BMQ tests, due to the fact of measuring different dimensions and establishing different cut-off points for non-adherence, as well as limitations of the methods themselves.
